The only thing that is worrying here is that you purchased postage twice so it's likely the first one is the tracking in your "Paid and dispatched" items. Regardless, as Soolin said, paste the second tacking number into the case. Personally I would be then calling eBay because it's the kind of mess up that can go against you.

It seems that the buyer has received the item, then noticed the tracking numbers don’t match up and claiming because they believe they will win the case. They WILL win the case, unless you change the tracking number to the actual one used on your item when you sent it. I am not sure why you wouldn’t have changed this number when you changed your postage method, but if you don’t then the case will go in the favour of the buyer. Simply typing the actual tracking number into the case details is not going to do anything. If you are unable to change the tracking information, you need to contact eBay my phone immediately, and explain to them why the tracking details are wrong.

Wait for a case and then defend it using your proof of delivery.
They opened a case already. Immediately after delivery

On the timing of it, it's possible … oh, no it's not.  I was going to say it's possible eBay alerted them to it having been delivered, but if you didn't put in the new tracking number then no.  Did you give the buyer the tracking number at all?  Because if not there's no way they could have known the parcel was delivered anywhere, unleas it was delivered to them.

Not that the specifics of what happened really make much difference; as said above you need to defend the case as a priority and then, if there is any way the buyer could be genuine, assist them.

I've started getting text messages from royal mail on the day of delivery so it's possible that the buyer got a text on delivery, then messaged as they hadn't actually got the item themselves if their details were submitted as part of it. If not 5mins later is very suspicious

I did yes, I messaged them the new tracking number, obviously I thought I was doing a good thing but the more I think about it they clearly saw it as an oppertunity :-(

Not sure this would be possible given they item wasn't sent using the ebay postage label.

Have you done what I suggested at the beginning, rather than tie yourself in knots? add the correct tracking to the case , point out item was delivered and then phone eBay to make sure they understand? AnyINR case times out in buyers favour after 4 days so you need to deal with this urgently.

Ah, so not so straightforward then - it is possible they could have been checking the tracking prior to the delivery, seen which day it was to arrive, then knowing what time their postie usually comes, checked again when it didn't arrive.

It is oddly coincidental timing but not impossible.

However, the main thing is to get the case closed in your favour to protect yourself, then assist them if they want to pursue the rigmarole of dealing with Royal Mail for a misdelivered item.

What reassurances did they give you?

I would watch the case like a hawk waiting to deal with anything unexpected as I don't necessarily always trust ebay.
