Splashback and/or tiles - please help!

We’re coming towards the end of a new kitchen project and have got down to the splashback and tiling above worktops and have hit a crossroad…

we’ve gone quartz worktop, and planners to have up stands and splash back above the hob.   Dilemma is, should (could) we tile either side of splashback above the upstands or is this typically wrong?? Read somewhere that upstands and splashback means painted wall only.

Got the tiles but we’re second guessing now, please help!!!

Personally, I'd rather have everything tiled without splashback than splashback without tiles, but for me functionality goes first, then aesthetics.
That said, I'm not sure what is better - splashback over tiles or tiles around splashback.

I'm not overkeen on the look of splashbacks so went for tiles. We have quartz and upstands and tiled the whole space with coloured grout.

Drat - can't find a link right now but there is the most amazing place near Wareham in Dorset that does bespoke glass splashbacks.  We got out kitchen done a year back and paid about £400 for a plain black glass one from B&Q or similar but this place does absolutely beautiful things for about £600.  I would have gone for that if I'd known.

Nice thing about glass is that you wipe it and it's clean.  Tiles have grout and that can never be properly cleaned - or at least not by me.

I take your point about tiles @Brie but I'd thoroughly recommend coloured grout. We've had it in the bathroom (grey) for about 5 years and it still looks amazing. I'm hoping the green in the kitchen will fare equally well. 🤞

I did neither upstands or tiles in my kitchen. Went for a polished lime plaster, and always intended on fitting a glass spalshback behind the hob. Got a local glass specialist that will print on to glass, and I have a photograph that I was going to use. Lack of funds & enthusiasm has put that finishing touch on hold for the time being.

Paint + splashback means you can change the colour scheme of a large part of the kitchen relatively easily, should you wish to in the future.
