    Thanks for everyone's advice. As an update. I raised the issue with Halifax. They made a goodwill reimbursement in excess of what I may have spent on calls. They also said I could ask for the operator on landline in any country (do they still exist??) and ask to reverse the charges. Well that's far more helpful than the advice I got from their chat help, which was basically 'you're on your own'.
  • Halifax Clarity Credit Card

    Just tried to use my Halifax card to pay for a Canadian eTa for an up-comng trip. The transaction was declined twice, and after trying the on-line chat ("Sorry, we can't help you with that query"), then waiting to speak to an actual person ("Sorry, I'm going to have to pass you to our fraud team"), finally got told that they won't approve the transaction because of the high levels of fraud with that merchant.

    That merchant is the Canadian government !!!
