Selling house without an agent

Hi. I need to sell my house, my neighbour has wanted to buy it for years. Can a house be sold without an estate agent? If so what is the process and pitfuls please. Thanks in advance.

I've just remembered - my parents bought their house without using an agent. It was near me, friends of mine lived there, they were separating and wanted to sell and my parents had been looking for a bungalow in my area for ages, so it was a done deal no agent involved. However my parents' house for sale was all paid for and they were considerably downsizing so there was no mortgage involved; also, it wasn't as if it was going to rebound on me if the sale fell through
OP why not ask your solicitor what details you need in order to do this
