Re-mortgaged and ended up paying life insurance twice

We took out a mortgage and life insurance policy in 1999 and then re-mortgaged in 2011. We asked for additional life insurance sum for the difference. It now seems that we had two policies that the insurance company did not link, one for the initial amount borrowed and one for the additional amount. So in affect we have been paying £20.70 too much for 13 years! What are our chances of getting this back?

Cant see any reason why you would be entitled to it back. You have had and still have the benefit of two insurance polices0

Unless you have anything in writing confirming that what you requested and what was provided were different, probably little chance. However, there is nothing to be lost by contacting the insurer. The insurers may agree to at least a partial refund as cancelling or reducing one of the policies will reduce their potential liability. As @marcia_ says, you have still had the potential benefit of the cover for that period.1

Original policy equals the initial amount. New policy for the additional amount. Put the two together and you have the required sum assured. So, you are not paying too much.
