Secondhand mifi if dirt cheap and a 1 month sim maybe worth it, but typically for a couple of weeks tethering should suffice.
OP, If you went on holiday in the UK for a couple of weeks where the property didn't have wifi, would you need to take a whole portable wifi with you? Given you will likely have wifi from other places.

4G MiFI router from CeX £18.
Superdrug Mobile Unlimited Data SIM £20/mth.
There are cheaper unlimited SIMs available but this was the easiest to obtain OTC same day.
Assume you know which networks give sufficient indoor coverage at your new gaff? Don't believe the online coverage maps.0 -

Use mobile to tether the essential items when you are in the house. Outside of that it can wait until you are connected.
Waste of £70 really otherwise, unless you will have use for the 5G router and SIM at other times.0 -
I'd either buy an add on for my mobile plan, or get a data only sim and use my phone as a hotspot. Lots of phones support dual sims.
You only really need it for essentials like banking though. You could manage watching less tv for a week or two to save data and it wouldn't matter if your ring cameras didn't work some of the time.0 -
Macano said:Thanks all. The issue is that we will have Ring doorbells and cams to get onto the internet, so it kind of implies the coverage needs to be 24/7. My assumption is that this won't be possible with the phone connection? Particularly when i leave the house with my phone. I see 3 have a deal that amounts to about £70 for a one off month of coverage. Right now that is looking to be the best option.

So to update on what I did, as this could be useful for anyone down the line in a similar position. I went to our local high street phone fix business (every high street has one or two now!) and asked what products they had. He had a few MiFi options: battery operated, plug-in, EE, and open sim models from Three and Vodafone. I got him to set them up and put in the Sim. I am glad I did this because the Three setup just didn't work. I was worried that when I got home and turned it on, for whatever reason it might not work. So we tried the Vodafone option and it is working. In total it cost me £40, which is where I wanted to be. Thanks again for all the advice.0

Good, glad you got it sorted.
Recurring deal on the Vodafone SIM? Don't forget to cancel any auto top-ups/payments.0 -

I had a mobile router and used it for 3 months with a PAYG SIM. Also used mifi in the past and that was fine too0
