Changing Supplier - Import and Export

Hi,

I'm looking for experience from people who've moved their metered export at the same time as they changed supply. For example moving from Octopus to EON. How much hassle getting export set up with the new supplier, and what sort of timescale?

I'm leaving it late as I'm hoping the solar panels will wake up in the next month or so, but I wasn't able to look at beginning of December as i wished, because our meter needs to be fixed.

I'm guessing if it takes a few week then export readings aren't backdated, but would be delighted if I'm wrong.

I'd be very interested to learn from others' experience too.

First thing must surely be to get your meter fixed.

In theory there's no reason your export shouldn't change over at the same time as the supply; there are no physical connections to change - it's purely administrative, but if there's going to be a delay then the time to do it is now before you start getting worthwhile generation to export.

sure the new has your G99 certificate from the get go, and any other docs eg MCS . That will / should enable them to switch without delay. I am not sure if they need to get a new exportMPAN.

Thanks. We have all the paperwork MCS, G.99 offer and post-installation confirmation, and schematic.  Would they need to apply for a new export MPAN?

I can't see why, you don't have to get a new import MPAN every time you change supplier.

I would expect the process to be easy and pain free.

Let's hope so. I can't do it anyway until the meter's fixed. But I was hoping someone had actually done it and could give real world experience.

Also bear in mind that, unlike FIT payments, anything you export after leaving your old "export supplier" and joining the new one doesn't have to be paid for. So you might want to switch while generation is poor and not in the summer!

I would expect it to work just like import, a closing and an opening reading agreed between suppliers.

I can't see anything being lost, why would it be?

It's how Ofgem write the rules.

Ok, but doesn't leaving the old supplier and joining the new one happen at the same time?

It might, but it doesn't have to. Unlike supply, export is allowed to have gaps.
I'm sure there was someone a year or two back who had this problem; they'd started a switch and their old supplier had terminated their export contract but the new supplier hit some sort of admin holdup (might have wanted more info from the householder) and it delayed their new contract. I'll see if I can find the thread once I'm off my phone and back on my laptop.
