No Claims Discount 9 years protected but personal insurance lapsed by almost 4 years
Hello - I had a nicely protected 9 years NCD. I went from Personal Insurance to being a named driver on my partners policy. The Named Driver Insurance company still wanted to see the NCD proof - all fine. Three years passed and almost to the fourth (Feb 2025) and now I want to take out personal car insurance - does anyone know of an Insurer that will accept a NCD that's almost 4 years old. We thankfully still have no claims but as the insurance wasn't in my name my NCD is considered by Insurers as null and void now. HELP! Thank you.

I don't think any insurer will accept NCD that is four years old. Most apply a maximum of 2 years, a handful will accept if for up to 3 years.
Some insurers will give you a "named driver no claims discount" if you take your own policy out with them so it's worth checking if the insurer you last used is one of them. It won't necessarily be cheaper than searching the whole market with no NCD though - NCD is not always as big a discount as people assume.
It's a bit late to do it now, but for the benefit of anyone reading this in the situation, the way you preserve both NCDs when you drop down to owning one car is to alternate the policyholder, so you insurer the car in your name one year and your partner's the next.3 -
Not recommending either firm but if you google "mirror NCD" or something similar you'll find two firms that will allow you to duplicate your partner's NCD assuming you live with them.
NCD is not always the 65-70% discount it used to be, was always a bit silly given the vast majority have maximum NCD for it really to be considered a discount rather than the norm. Do quotes online with 0 NCD and it may not be as bad as you think, certainly some here have found less than £10 difference between 0 NCD and 20 years NCD1 -
Get a quote from the company you're a named driver with, they are the most likely to honour the NCD. If they give you the full 9 years NCD you'll be able to take that elsewhere with year 10.
Compare that to the rest of the market without NCD.
