Charge for refund

I'll try keep this short
I purchased a suit on 7th January 2025 at 9pm at on debenhams website that said next day delivery if purchased before 11pm
I needed this suit for Saturday 11th  January 2025
This did not get dispatched till 15:30 on the 8th January 2025
Then evri left it in a depot for a week I finally received it on the 14th January 2025
So I for my event I went out to a shop to buy another so no longer needed this didn't open it sent it straight back hoping to get a full refund
But they are charging Me £1.99 to send it back for something they didn't deliver in the time scale they said they would how can I fight this I know it's only £1.99 but it's the principle and how many people does this happen to I believe it to be completely wrong when they made the mistake not me

    What is the £1.99 for?

You describe it as a "charge for refund", which is not allowed, but is it actually return postage or similar, which is allowed if their T&Cs warn you of this?

I presume that otherwise they refunded all you had paid?

    Was next day postage extra?

As change of mind, only gets std delivery refunded.
    Life in the slow lane
  • Did you actually pay for next day delivery? It has to be chosen at checkout otherwise standard delivery is selected.

The £1.99 is a charge for returning items as a change of mind and is allowed.
  • Yes next day delivery was £5.99 extra
And the £1.99 is to post back the items as its the only way to return them

    1.  So heve they refunded the £5.99 extra in respect of the failed next day delivery?

    2.  In your OP you said Debenhams had "charged" you £1.99 to send the suit back.  Have Debenhams actually charged you or is that simply what you had to pay Royal Mail to send it back to them?

Debenhams aren't allowed to "charge" you for returning an item, but as @screech_78 says, if Debenhams T&Cs say you have to pay return postage for items you no longer need, then that is perfectly ok

Ok, so as they failed in their next day delivery, you would be due a refund of the difference between standard delivery and next day delivery.

They're taking £1.99 off the refund for postage of it that you have no choice as that's the only way to return it is by post

    2. "
They're taking £1.99 off the refund for postage of it that you have no choice as that's the only way to return it is by post" .

Are you saying (a) that they deducted £1.99 from your refund to cover a pre-paid return label or similar that they provided to you, or (b) are you saying that they deducted £1.99 from your refund but you still had to pay return postage yourself?  Or are you saying something else?

It helps others to help you if you can be clear about what happened andif you can answer questions clearly.
