Barclays, telephone banking and joint accs

Options
My partner and I have joint bank account with Barclays and up until recently he has dealt with all of the telephone banking. His working hours have been stretched which leaves me to deal with ringing around for such things.

Last week when I rang them I didn't have any trouble and could transfer our money whilly-nilly, but, today when I rang I was told that....

Tele-teller: "You can't have access because you have come through on your partner's account details, try ringing back using your account details."

Me: "I have used my account details, it's a joint account."

Tele-teller "I can see that, but, you haven't inputted your details."

Is it just me or is that the most ridiculous thing you've heard in ages?

I am presuming that she means my account details as in card number and passcodes etc but we have been told that we can only have 1 card, "1 account, 1 card", and even that is in his name and before it became a joint account it was mine. Grrrrr, how annoying!

Do you have to use telephone banking to do what you need to do?

Barclays have an excellent online service, that will enable you to do most things yourself. You can transfer to other accounts, setup/amend standing orders, delete/create payees etc. I very rarely need to use telephone banking as a result. Of course, I am assuming you have access to the Internet at home? If you don't, then I can understand why you need the telebanking service.

My partner is an undischarged bancrupt, (in process of getting it cleared), so, we have been told we can't have online facilities. The only other alternative is to pay out almost £3 in bus fares each time I want to transfer money as there is no banks near to where we live, (rural living - fantabbiedoozie!!). Think we are just stuck in catch 22 situation until we get the certificate of discharge through.

You can have a maximum of two cards on a Barclays account. Even if you don't want a card, you can have a telephone banking membership (you get a piece of card with a number on it to use instead of the card number, and your own pass code).

The telephone banking membership belongs to your husband, not you, and the contact centre are correct to refuse to serve you if you use those details.
