Car dealership refund processing time?

Hey everyone!

I purchased a car on 21/12/24 from a dealership who are registered on companies house. Unfortunately a couple of days ago the car developed a serious intermittent fault which a brand new replacement part alone is over £1k.

After speaking with the dealer who wanted to put a second hand part to repair the car which I wasn’t comfortable with because this is a known fault with these cars and when it goes wrong it’s costly, we agreed for myself to return the car for a full refund as I am within the threshold of the consumer rights act to return the vehicle.

The dealer has messaged me advising that when I return the car which will be tomorrow, I will have to wait up to 28 days to receive a refund!

Is this right? Is this legal? 

They requested we used bank transfer for payment and I have receipts of purchase etc but something seems off. 

So I can send the payment instantly to them as requested but I have to wait 28 days for a refund?

If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it immensely, as it has been a very stressful week.

I don't think 28 days is unreasonable.  I would be happy that they're complying with the law and giving you your money back.

I take it that this is not a small dealer, where a refund will be processed by the person behind the desk, more on that will have a finance dept who will process the payment?

it’s a small dealer, one man operation.

Money always takes longer to come back than it does to spend, if you bought a shirt and refunded it, it would still take around 3 days to come back into your account. If it's a one man operation then 28 days is probably right, he may have to go an Accountant who is outsourced to log the refund and that may have it's own time frame. I imagine it'll come back to you sooner than 28 days though
