What did you last pay for your motor insurance premium?

I just renewed my motor insurance premium. I have 10 years NCD and no accidents. I drive a 2009 Honda Civic 1.8L Petrol. I paid £263 with Aviva Zero.

I just got quotes for my wife who has 12 years NCD and no accidents. She drives a 2005 Honda Civic 1.6L Petrol. Her cheapest quote was £543. She is a nurse and I am an accountant. I'm wondering if profession can be such a big factor in premium calculation models.

There is a job estimator where you can compare different jobs. I compared unemployed with retired. Unemployed was much more expensive. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance-job-picker/ There are lots of versions of nursing that seem to cost less than £543.

  • Insurance companies can use most any information they like to play their businesses.

Some companies has set figures for data sets, like make if car, colour, petrol, diesel, EV, postcode, age or whatever.

I've used plenty of search engines like most if us have I guess, it's funny getting many quotes say between £400 to £700 then a lesser number of quotes £700 to 1.2K and then a sprinkle from 1.2K to 5K or 8K more, think I have seen 10K a few times.

A couple of years ago I insured with NFU via 'phone call and the agent told me if I put 'administrator' rather than 'PA' it would be a lot cheaper. He didn't know why, he was just doing the calculations

I have posted recently because I have got very varied results between online and telephone with Aviva. £574 online, £693 for renewal or £913 if I ring for a quote. The online price didn’t come up with the money saving search.

Most companies do online discounting or differential pricing so no surprises that online is cheaper than the phone. Aviva's standard products arent available via aggregators but they have the likes of Aviva Zero that do sell on aggregators

My wife's car was insured for years with Direct Line but the cost shot up this year, despite her never having an accident in nearly 40 years of driving.  I found new insurance for less than half of the renewal quote from DL.

I have stayed with the same insurer for many years and have no complaints - before COVID it was usually around £215 per annum, due to the pandemic reducing claims it dropped to £168 in 2022, shot up to £245 in 2023 when "normal life" resumed (levels of claims overall increased so we all paid the price) then in 2024 it dropped back to £214.  50 years driving so I expect in future years I will be paying the price for getting older, despite a squeaky clean driving record.  Car is 23 years old, securely garaged overnight & I declare at renewal no more than 5000 miles a year.  It does all seem to be a bit of a lucky dip!

DL's had major problems and indeed has now been sold to Aviva, if the CMA allows it to go ahead must be a question, but big hikes are not surprising

I'm in the final year of my three year fix with LV through Saga. Bracing myself for a shock on renewal later this year.
