Speed camera near J2 M25 towards Dartford tunnel

So I got caught speeding the other day… I’m not here to dispute that, it was a fair cop Guv, the reason I tell you that is because I’ve been driving super carefully ever since having got away with being able to do a speed awareness course. Anyhow, tonight I was on the M25 around junction two I reckon, and as I approached the Dartford Tunnel, regular users will know it gets pretty congested so the speed limit started to decrease. First the overhead signs went down to 60, and then 50 which I was doing when a speed camera went off. At the next lot of overhead signs it was suddenly 40. I called National highways and asked if there could be a fault and lucky for me he said that it can sometimes happen (I hope that conversation was recorded because I’d use it in court) Just wondered if anyone had any previous experience with this as I feel slightly short changed if I’ve been caught between a 50 and 40 sign doing 50 which is what the sign a couple of yards back said. I’ll be absolutely devastated if I get a fine and points before my speed awareness courses even comes around! Especially as I was adhering to the last speed limit I was shown

The speed should be attained before reaching the limit sign. If you saw it change then you had sufficient time to take action.

Sorry I don’t think you’ve understood me. The speed limit dropped to a 60 and I did 60, then it dropped to a 50 and I did 50. As I passed under the 50 sign the camera got me while I was doing 50 in a 50. It didn’t change to 40 until the next overhead sign.

If the limit changed at the point of you going under the gantry you should not get caught for speeding as there is a delay before it comes into effect to avoid catching people like you who don’t have time too slow down, however you may still get flashed as when a change in speed limit or a closed lane signal comes on the relevant enforcement device performs a self-check procedure, at which point vehicles passing it may notice a flash from the equipment.

That makes sense then, maybe it was that because my speedo was definitely bang on 50. It only felt like there was one flash if that means anything?

I read a thread on here before like this and a very knowledgeable poster who actually worked setting the cameras up explained it can happen, but when the limit changes no action is taken for a couple of minutes, so yes, it can happen as you describe and you are going to be ok.

But you are only guessing that the camera got you and not somebody else - or anybody at all

It's pointless stressing about it as there's nothing you can do.  Wait and see if you get a NIP

True, it’s only because I was ahead of everyone, and no one overtook me in that timeframe
