Hello
Please excuse me, I am not the brightest star in the sky
I have just read the following in  The Daily Mirror

The Government-led War Pension Scheme (WPS) dishes out as much as £12,262 per year to eligible individuals, although this is dependent on numerous different factors

On leaving the Army in 1978 after having surgery on a back issue. I received a "re-settlement Grant" plus my service pension and a "War Disablement Pension" Is the above article referring to me, eg does it mean there are more benefits available to me

Unlikely - just seems to be saying that the Government pays war pensions to those eligible.

May be worth running your circumstances past the experts - the RBL war pensions dept - to see if there is anything else you can claim.

Hi there, and absolutely no need to apologise — your question is a good one, and it’s great that you’re looking into what you might be entitled to

From what you’ve shared, it sounds like you were already receiving a War Disablement Pension after leaving the Army in 1978, which means you were part of the War Pension Scheme (WPS) — the same one mentioned in the Daily Mirror article.

That £12,262 figure they quoted is likely a general example based on a specific level of assessed disability (e.g. 40% or 50%), but actual payments vary depending on your disability assessment, age, and circumstances.

A few things you might want to check:

    • Has your disability worsened since it was first assessed?
If so, you may be able to request a reassessment, which could increase your pension amount.

    • Are you receiving all the WPS-related extras you might be entitled to?
There are additional allowances available under the WPS — like:

      • Mobility Supplement

      • Constant Attendance Allowance

      • Unemployability Supplement

      • Allowance for Lowered Standard of Occupation

You can contact Veterans UK (part of the Ministry of Defence) to request a review or to check what else might be available. Their number is: 0808 1914 2 18
    Or visit: https://www.gov.uk/war-pension

Hope this helps — and thank you for your service.
