Getting rid of landline?

Thinking or getting rid of our landline as we hardly use it.
Was looking at our plusnet bill and they are charging us £28 a month just for the landline!.
Current contract is ending next week and they've offered a new package - no landline , just broadband for £25 a month. (We were being charged £42 a month for landline and broadband. )

So looks cheaper to ditch the landline and just get the broadband right? Or is there anything i've missed? I should phone them up but have a stinking cold atm.

Being a bit of an "oldie" I still like my landline.  That now comes via the broadband and costs me £8 a month (the broadband is £25)
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

How are Plusnet charging you £28 just for a ‘landline’ , PN don’t do shared metallic path where PN supply ‘dialtone’ and another company supplies broadband over the same line , there are very few SMPF customers at all these days , and those that remain will be BT for telephony , where  BT supply the dialtone , and a legacy ISP broadband package is supplied by someone else , so two separate bills , you don’t seem to be are saying you have Plusnet telephony only but both services for £42.

BT when they supply telephony only ( so no broadband from anyone even other networks like Virgin ) charge about the same as you say you pay Plusnet , but have a phone only discount of around £13-15 , so brings the £28 down to £13-£15 , plus any call charges for outgoing calls made, if you have been with Plusnet for telephone only you have been throwing money down the drain, but you aren’t a telephone only customer and you don’t pay £28 for telephone, you are  paying £42 because you have broadband and phone from Plusnet , there is no subdivision of the monthly price into two parts ,  £28  telephone and £14 for broadband and  the bill shows the price as x+y=£42 ,  it’s just £42 , they don’t break it down into two parts , they haven’t done that for decades, so you are misinformed if you think £28 is telephone, if it were then your broadband would be £14 , that’s not a price anyone offers broadband for on Openreach lines , so basically you don’t pay £28 for telephone, you pay a single not divided up into two parts price of £42.

FWIW , Plusnet don’t even sell telephony to new customers, if you remove telephony from you PN package expect about £3 to £5 reduction or more if you have inclusive calls , but you have never paid £28 for telephone unless you pay for inclusive calls , but that’s optional anyway and still isn’t £28, you need to examine your bill more carefully

It's because Plusnet are cheeky shites and sting you hard with 'out of contract' pricing. In a nutshell if you are in contract they discount the full price of either the broadband or landline from the supposed cost of the overall package.
They'll also have the gall to bill you in advance, so you see the weighty extra charge in your DD the month before your contract actually expires. Oh, and also don't forget the £3 price increase per month, each year of the contract.
I really wish companies wouldn't try this and just charge a fair (and not excessive) price overall.

As stated , no provider had a bill in two parts , line and broadband, is just a single fee for the service, they may offer a discount, so as an example BT , broadband with a telephone facility ( not landline or line rental ) may be £35 , or the same broadband without a telephone facility is £30 , so £5 discount for not having telephone , but it isn’t the case that you can say if telephone is £5 more , remove the broadband and give me a phone service for £5 it’s not like that .
if the OP pays £42 for both services ( out of contract ) but can get broadband on its own for £25 inside a contract, and they don’t use the phone service anyway ( so won’t miss it  ) then obviously it’s a no brainier to save £17, but I suspect that £17 isn’t just for pay as you go telephone service, it will probably be for unlimited calls , so you would think anyone taking a calls plan like that would be making calls from the landline otherwise why pay for included calls but not use them

If you pay £9 then that’s much  more than the PAYG option ( £3 to £5) and unless you got a really good deal is less than the typical unlimited calls plan charge of £12 to £18 ( depending on how good at negotiating you are ) but the charge is for is a call plan , unfortunately line rental is connected in the publics mind as something to do with telephony, so some uniformed ISP continue to use terms like ‘landline’ and you put the two terms together landline and line rental , but your £9  isn’t the charge to get the service to your door and it doesn’t really matter if that’s one service broadband , or two broadband and telephony , the charge on your bill is the difference between having two services ( and as stated in your case you have some included calls either based on a number of minutes ( 700 probably ) or unlimited calls for your £9 , but it isn’t the ‘rental’ of the line , that’s included in the broadband charge which is one item on your bill  …..if you decided to get rid of telephony and save your £9 the bill would not say broadband and line rental it would just say broadband , what’s more to follow your logic your  bill , if line rental were a separate item , should have  three items on it , broadband, line rental and call plan but it doesn’t it has two because of your call plan ……broadband charges includes the ‘line’ , if someone has an optional phone service the call plan , PAYG, 700 mins or Unlimited is a separate charge because they cost different amounts and obviously is only on bills of customers that decide they want a telephone service with their broadband

No harm in ditching the landline if you never use and it will save you money. Most mobile contracts come with unlimited minutes these days and Wi-Fi calling ensures a reliable signal. Therefore landlines are pretty much obsolete technology.

However, I'm surprised you're being charged that much. I pay £24 a month for Vodafone broadband, which includes a landline (which I don't use).

I've just ditched it from today, partly for similar reasons, although the cold and scam callers who were the only callers left after I asked everyone else to use my mobile number made it easy to make the decision.

Ditched our landline last year when upgrading to full fibre with plusnet.

Just need to make sure you inform the doctors etc. Even though we changed our landline to the mobile the doctors still phoned on the
landline, had to get the receptionist to put a note on our file to use mobiles only.

Other than that we rarely used it.
