I am currently in the waiting area of our local Citizens Advice. I am literally ishtting*?*!" myself with anxiety and dread. I hope I made the right decision to come here today. Can't wait to share all the info after this meeting.

All this feels like an out-of-body experience.

Okay, I did it. I just stepped out of my meeting with Citizens Advice and although I was a crying mess the entire time because of humiliation, the lady was very professional and understanding. She had some paperwork she wanted me to complete.

She also said that they partner with PayPlan to deal with my UK debt.

Overall, I feel relieved I finally went to see them. And I feel very lucky that I got the advisor/case handler that I did.

It's been a while since I last posted here.

I have had a quiet 2 weeks since I last went to Citizens Advice. I have been working on my budget. It seems like I am making changes to it every time I look at my spreadsheet.

Payplan is helping me with my UK debts, and Citizens Advice will help me with my local debts.

I am taking my time because I want my loan accounts to default first before I start making repayments.

CAB said that I need to sort my budget with PP first before they can help me so then they can start making offers to my local creditors.
  • Well done on going to CAB and I am happy to hear that it was a very positive experience for you. The budgeting will take a while to settle down, but it will and you are moving in the right direction. Good luck V x

Update... Nothing much has happened since the last time I posted. Had another meeting with CA but they advised I should speak to PayPlan first so they can help me with my UK debts. Talked to PayPlan but haven't made any final confirmations yet because I still need to finalize my budget and also need to save up more for my emergency fund.

I haven't gotten in touch with any of my creditors at all... I am only a little bit anxious about CA. I hope they will not pressure me into starting with my monthly payments. They did seem patient and all but I just do not know how they work and will they want me to make payments ASAP? I do not know. But not communicating with them now until I am definitely happy to proceed with payments.

Also, my PayPlan is on hold. I also hope they will hold on and wait and not cancel my account or anything... Just haven't research enough about the waiting period. I hope they will still be there when I am finally ready.

It has only been a month since I decided to make a change about my situation. It is going very slowly but I at least have a little money in my bank account.

Looking back to last month, my how stressful that was. I cannot count how many times I had panic attacks because I thought I wouldn't have enough to last us the month. But I was able to get a refund on some of my loan and CC payments, that's how I was able to last till the end of January.

I am going to have a busy next few months. I am going to wait (bravely) for those default and demand letters. And I will stick to the plan of waiting it out.

It is very difficult to find people in Jersey with the same situation because their local Facebook group pages are very judgmental and it sounds like I am the only person in the entire island with this problem. I hope all my entries here will help someone in the future.

I currently have 2 accounts now that have defaulted. I am waiting for three more. Following advice from here, I should wait for info about where I can make payments. I might just go with Payplan though but I want to wait until all accounts default at the same time before I make a move. The thing is, I might get a CCJ while waiting. I am wanting to move back to the UK in a few months, and the thing I am really scared of is not being able to find a house to rent.

I do not want to get a CCJ or anything that is going to affect my ability to rent a house.

For the avoidance of doubt, and to try to ease your mind a little, original creditors do not, on the whole, take legal action against defaulted accounts, this was explained to you in other previous posts.

It would be too costly to take everyone to court, so they simply either sell the debt or assign a debt collector to mange the account.

Legal action is only likely if the debt is sold on, and you ignore the new owner, other than that, you are very unlikely to get a CCJ.

Once a debt defaults and the lender decides what to do with it, they will write to you, those entering debt management do not have legal action taken against them, as long as the lender is being paid, all will be well, so please stop worrying.

Thank you, you are always helpful sourcrates.

I am reading but I cannot find a complete guide on how to set up a self-managed DMP. I came upon posts mentioning NEDCAB, so I looked for the website and tried to sign in, so I can read more or maybe see the letter templates for the collection agency once I receive communication from them, but the NEDCAB website is down. When I have more time, I am going to write a detailed timeline of my own experience.

By the way, on youtube I saw documentaries people breaking down doors or being backed up by the police when trying to demand payments from debtors. It is very scary. What kind of collectors are they?

You don`t need to "set anything up", you can just pay whatever is affordable on any debt collectors website, all a self managed DMP actually means is that you make your payments yourself, instead of some 3rd party, that`s it, no more complex than that.

What you see on the telly is heavily edited, they will be bailiffs chasing private debts or unpaid court fines, consumer credit debt doesn't warrant such activity.

Update: One default has appeared with HSBC, then they posted me details about Moorcroft who are taking over. Waiting for this.

Got a scary letter from Conister Bank from the Isle of Man threatening they would take court action against me. Offered token payments and they accepted. So glad about that. This account hasn't defaulted yet though but I said I would start paying in July.

Amex hasn't defaulted yet but they forwarded to AIC. So I got in touch with AIC to offer a token payment. But they got back to me and said they are not managing the collections for my account anymore. And they suggested to contact Amex.
