In my experience the Roku stick is much superior to the Firestick (I've got both).

Interim update: I went round in circles with the AI chatbox on Sony's website, but found that if I specifically asked "how do I get in contact with a real person in Customer Services?", the chatbox gave me a link to an online customer query form (link is here but may be TV-products specific, perhaps)

I sent a query yesterday evening via the form, and have got a n email response today from Sony customer support with a zip file and instructions on how to install it to a USB and then implement the updates on the TV.

    The instructions say "
Copy the extracted folder (including the .BIN file) to the root of an empty USB stick."

Does anyone know what the 'root of an empty USB stick' is? Do I just paste everything onto the USB, having plugged it into my laptop, or is the 'root' something else within the USB's formatting?

Many thanks for any further thoughts.

It appears to have 2 USB 2.0 sockets, if so just buy a Firestick (or alternative) and access apps through that.
Can you connect a Firestick to USB?

Sorry, my Firestick has been plugged in for a long time so I'd forgetten that it is, as Neil confirms, HDMI. Fortunately the OP's TV does have a HDMI socket, although I think it may only be 1 so if it's in use for something else that may be an issue.
Luckily there are I think 4 HDMI ports on the back, so there should be some free if needed

The root is what appears in (My) Computer before you make any folders.

So in this screenshot if this was your USB stick, the folders are "off" the root.  You don't put anything in those.  You put them where the "root" file is I've highlighted.

If you look at the properties of the file it would say:

(your would probably be drive D for external drives, I'm using hard drive to demonstrate)

Thanks very much. I've just ordered a new USB so it's a clean one, and will take it from there!

You're right, there are (1 side, 3 rear), I'd misread the specification web page, so I'd definitely go for a plug in stick of some sort (I haven't used a Roku but Alderbank's comment may be worth taking into account, it's also HDMI).
