Hi everyone, can someone help me with my tax? I work part-time for Uber Eats and started in January 2024. So far, I've earned around £2,300.

This is my first time doing a self-assessment tax return, and I'm completely new to it. Someone mentioned that I should calculate my earnings from January 2024 (when I started) to April 2024, which would only amount to around £350(Jan 2024-April 2024 earnings) Does this mean I don't need to do a self-assessment tax return? This is where I'm confused.

If I do need to file, when is the deadline for submitting my tax return? Again from January 2024 up till now (Jan 2025) I have earned £2300. I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you everyone 🥹🙏

First suggestion, don't muddle up different tax years, you will just cause yourself loads of hassle/confusion.

Have you registered as self employed yet?

You can run through this link

The skinny is that the tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, and formal self employed earnings are only required over £1K. So ye 2024 no requirement, ye 2025 will need submitting.

Thank you so much. I just went on the link and it says I do not need to pay anything however when is the deadline for this year? When do I need to apply? Do I calculate my earnings from April 2024 to April 2025? I just want to make sure because I'm worried I will get fined. Thanks again! :)

No I have not. Do I  need my UTR number first?

If your only reason to consider Self Assessment for 2023-24 was the £350 then that is covered by the trading allowance so unless you want to claim a loss (on actual expenses instead of the trading allowance) you don't need to do anything for 2023-24 and would only need to file a tax return for 2024-25.

The deadline for 2024-25 is 31 January 2026.

You still need to register as self employed with HMRC so you will be asked to file a return for 2024-25.

Thank you so much! I just wanted to confirm, I have until next year (Jan 2026) to complete my self-assessment form? Should I register a couple of months early, or is it fine to wait until January next year? I’m asking because I’m concerned they might request certain documents, and obtaining those could take weeks. I just want to make sure everything is ready by January 2026. Thank you so much for your help

I think you are missing the whole point.  It is Self Assessment.  If HMRC decide to investigate your return that is when you will be asked for documents or other evidence to support what you have shown on your return.

And don't forget a tax return is for all your taxable income.

It is completely pointless to leave it so long to register.  You have clearly had turnover of at least £1k in the current tax year so there is nothing to be gained by waiting.

You have several months to file the return but starting the process by registering might as well be done sooner rather than later.

I am confused what you just wrote. But regardless I need to fill in the form by January 2026 next year? Are you saying I should register now? If I do then I still need to edit the form next year (January 2026) earnings?

Register now to make sure you're ready. You won't be able to start your 2024/25 tax return until that tax year ends. Once you do, you can start the tax return and save it if you need to get more information.
