I have the Apache OpenOffice 4.1.5 and when I use OpenWriter I cannot get the Spelling check. The spelling box gets open but, although I selected it, it seems inactive and says ''Spelling None". Furthermore, in a different version of OpenOffice the misspelled words were wavy underlined in red and that was quicker than getting the box. I tried to follow the various solutions I found online but they do not work. Any ideas? Thanks.

OpenOffice isn't really supported anymore.  You should replace it with LibreOffice, which is based on the same code but much more up to date.

Agree id swap to Libre as they are updating there system and any bugs regularly.

I stop using Microsoft excel and word when the subscription costs came in. A friend recommended downloading open office libre which is free. It has been ok for what i want do.
Recently upgraded my computer and the person who custom put together the computer installed apache not libre. I used it a few times but couldnt get on with the way the drag and drop worked in apache spreadsheets. So ive installed libre onto the new computer. And unistalled the apache.

I think it also depend on what you usually do and in my case being already used to work with. OpenOffice offers less but is more user friendly. I just downloaded Libre and  see how it goes. Thanks.

When selecting the Spelling check a box with a word and suggestion appears. And it seems to have only English/French/Spanish. Would it be possible to have the wrong spelling wavy underlined and set in a different language?

The wrongly misspelled words are not red wavy underlined. I still need some help. Thanks.

make sure the hunspell uk dictionary is installed.  Go to Tools / Spelling.   Under options, User defined dictionaries click on new.  In the name type hunspell.  That should do it.  You may need to restart libreoffice.

Have you considered Google docs?  I switched from libreoffice to google docs and everything just works with no messing around.

Thanks!! By kind of following your instructions I managed to have the AutoSpellingCheck on. The problem is that I don't know how to select either English or another language, and now the spelling mistakes are marked in both languages. After Tools < Languages < Select all text  I don't know what to do. (The Spelling & Grammar doesn't work but I don't mind.)
    Thanks again.

Think you need to go to Tools/Options/Languages/General and select the documents to be in English(UK).  Then Tools/Options/Languages/Writing Aids and uncheck any dictionaries you don't want.

Thanks but if I write Italian and English in the same document, I cannot get the Italian misspelling marked.

I only manage to have English misspelling:

    ''How cann I do itt?''

(And all words in Italian are underlined even if correct.)
