NO FAULT COLLISION BUT HIRE CAR INSURANCE NOT COVERED

Wife's car was stationary and hit from behind. Other driver admitted liability, exchanged details and contacted his company before my wife contacted hers. His company phoned her at the scene and said they would cover everything which would negate any excess on her policy. Hire car delivered to home the following day. All good so far except hire company insisted the car was used on my wife's car insurance. Contacted the insurance company but wasn't given an coherent answer. Asked for an email explanation but nothing received. She has no written record from either the Insurance or hire company as all on phone. Car signed for on tablet. Does anyone know if insurance company should pay for cover? Thanks in advance.

Check if your vehicle is on the Motor Insurance Database.

Was the hire company a national one, make sure you have some correspondence via email.

Did they mean the hire car insurance is covered, as in the cover to drive it, rather than the cost of it? The cost should be covered by the other driver's insurance but the actual insurance is probably your wife's insurance for the damaged car - it usually includes cover for a replacement vehicle during repairs

ed to add I think I misread the original post sorry

In the first instance phone up the Third Party Insurer again, it would be unusual for them to hire a car without insurance for a TP, it would be common for one of their own insureds. They may have made an error on the instruction to the hire car company or the hire car company may not have spotted you are not their policyholder.

If they say they dont provide insurance then you would need to contact your own insurers and add it as a Temporary Additional Vehicle. Any charge for this you would need to pay and then reclaim from the other insurer.

The hire car will have Third Party cover without doubt, MID won't tell you if it has own vehicle damage cover or not and just because there is an insurer on there doesn't mean the terms of hire dont state that you have to reimburse them.

It's common for hire cars provided by an insurer to their own policyholders to be covered by the hiring insurer rather than the insurer of the hire car. It keeps the price of hire cheaper for the insurer.

Normally only if its your insurers that are managing the repairs not any random repairs that you or someone else setup
  • They should have emailed her a copy of the document she signed on the tablet, check junk and spam folders or call them to resend. I had a hire car when mine was in repair, the hire charges were covered by the other side, but the car itself was insured by my insurer while I drove it, they essentially 'added' it to my current policy so I didn't pay anything extra to insure the hire car. I think they do this when they know the hire will be long term as on other occasions, I've seen places like enterprise use their own insurers when I've had the car a matter of days.

Check your insurance certificate. Its the only way you'll know the actual answer. Mine says

    "1. Description of vehicle a) GF05TFZ
    b) Any motor vehicle supplied to the Policyholder under the 1st Central’s Approved Repairer
scheme while the vehicle described above is being repaired as a direct result of damage
    covered by this policy."
  • Thank you all for the help and advice. Hire company have now included waiver cover to protect her policy. Pushing hard for email/paper evidence of what she signed up to on the (well known) hire company ipad.

I would want that cover explained in writing as well as of they used the term waiver cover I would want to understand exactly what they means.

Also look at excesses they put in the cover. Seen windscreen excesses of £1k on some.

The OP isnt claiming off their insurance company so the vehicle isnt being supplied under their insurers approved repairer scheme.

Some hire car companies match your own insurance excess in these circumstances, others you pay their standard excess but could reclaim the difference between the two from the third party insurer
