Passport query

I am hoping to go to Canada in August 2008 for a couple of weeks and my EU passport expires in December 2008. Would it be ok to go with my existing passport as it would still have 4 months to go after i come back or would i need to renew it before i go as i remember hearing in the past that a passport had to be valid for more than 6 months before you go on a trip abroad. Thanks

I don't know if this link will answer your question. If not just type passport in google and it will come up with a load of websites. I did this the other day when we wanted to find out how much it would cost to renew my husband's passport and I just typed renewing passport and found out the information I needed.

  • Hi, I went to the USA and arrived back the day before my passport expired - stupid me forgot to check and only realised the day before we went. Thought that we would not be allowed to go but after a nervous wait at check in all was ok - phew!!

Mind you I think if I had time to renew I would not risk it again. Good luck.

Hi, when you say EU passport, what actual country is it from?

If it's a UK passport and it's endorsed BRITISH CITIZEN then the passport need only be valid for the period of intened stay.

Some countries only require the passport to be valid for the duration of the stay. However some airlines and tour operators have their own rules and may require a minimum validity of 6 months.

If it is a UK passport you can renew it at any time and any unused period of up to 9 months will be added to it.

US embassy in London website says you have to have 90 days left (I think it used to be 6 months) although they will stamp you in for fewer days if you have less but Canada definitely was 6 months -Worth a call to the Canadian High Commision in London to check I reckon.

For Canada your passport needs to be valid for one day after for your intended stay. Full stop.

Just google passport validity canada uk and you'll get loads of sites saying that.
