What's the edge of the red paint like - can you feel it?0

For the mist coat, use whatever paint you will be using for the final coats watered down by around 30-40%. Don't be tempted to use cheap watered down emulsion.
If the new plaster has been feathered nicely into the old wall, you should be good to go. If you can feel any "lips" between the new plaster and old stuff, you'll see them once you paint so best to sort them before. Anything that stands out after the mist coat can be sorted before you carry on painting. I use toupret powdered filler and it's very good, sands easily to create a seamless finish and doesn't flash when painted over.1 -
If you are uncertain as to whether the finish is good enough for paint, just go ahead and roll on a nice 'mist' coat as Rob says. Go right over the red too. Once dry, you'll see if the edges need feathering, using a light source held close to the wall and shining sideways.Any small blemishes or ridges can likely be sanded out using 120 or 180 grit paper and a flat block. Any more obvious ridges and steps will likely need a thin skim of filler, and then sanded. The mist coat will sand away so won't hinder you.Make sure everything is bone dry first.1

If you can feel an edge it will show up when painted.1

Thank you for all the advice, i will wait for a while as this was only done tuesday so i want to make sure it is fully dried before i start painting, the edges feel smooth enough but i will check again, im not in a rush to get it done, but want to get it done right1

This is where the wall is, i have left it now for a couple weeks, as you can see on 2nd picture there is a bit of texture, spoken to local brewers decorating centre and they have advised might be best to lightly sand whole wall before mist coat0
