NCB Advise / help From Hasting to Vavista

Hi,

When i left vavista to go to Hastings in january 2024 i had 14 years NCB as stated on their insurance expiry letter.

Unfortunately due to a accident which was deemed my fault (car at fault left scene) in Nov 24 my renewewal this january from Hastings is rididculously high & my NCB is now 4 years (I assume they have deducted 5 years off their max 9 years NCB)

As I have never had an accident since starting to drive many moons ago Im completed new to all this. Is my NCB now 4 years which I declare provided by Hastings or do I have 9 years NCB??

Im planning on returning to Vavista but Im just unsure what NCB I actually have now? I dont wish to void my insurance with Vavista by decarng incorrect information.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your NCD is whatever Hastings say that it is on your renewal letter - that's what Vavista will want to see if they ask for proof of your NCD. The hypothetical NCD that you might have had if you made the same claim with a different insurer dorsn't matter.

If you have more than 5 years NCD and make a claim most insurers will reduce your NCD to 3 years, so Hastings are actually being fairly generous if they only reduce it to 4.

You have 4 years as it's all just a gimmick and each company runs their scheme as they see fit.

As soon as you went with Hastings you had 9 years not 15 if that is the maximum that they recognise.

Probably makes little difference between the 4 year and 9 years as far as the price goes anyway.

Whilst there are norms in NCD there are no industry rules and how they operate vary between products and providers.

Motor has one of the more standardised approaches but there are still variances. Normally, if you dont have NCD Protection then if you have 5 or more years NCD you drop to 3 years after a fault accident. If you have 5 or under you lose 2 years (to a minimum of 0).

Traditionally NCD maxed out at 5 years, whilst some insurers started to give some credit for a higher number it was all smoke and mirrors because everyone maxed out at the same percentage discount and having up to 9 years NCD rather than 5 just meant it took longer to get to maximum. They still wanted to have a material loss after a claim so stuck with the rule of dropping to 3 years
