Child Benefit stopped as my Ex Partner now earns too much

Hi, my Ex and I are divorced, but have 50/50 custody. I earn below 40k a year but my Ex has got a new job and is earning over 70k, so recently informed me that the Child Benefit was being stopped due to this. Previously it was used to cover after school cub for our daughter. This now means I have to pay it (about £500 a year) for the days I have my daughter (4 days one week, 3 days the following day). Is there anyway that I can still claim Child Benefit still?

I wouldn't expect the income of an ex-partner to come into the calculation of your entitlement to CB after the divorce.  Do you claim Child Benefit in your own name or was it claimed by/in the name of your ex?
  • My ex set all that up, I am in full time employment and claim nothing. I am in rented accommodation. We have been divorced for about 3 years, apart 7 years.

Does your ex get the child benefit?

If so, then it is his income that will apply.

Unless your Ex is desperate to hang on to the Child Benefit (and do the whole high income child benefit charge via self-assessment etc) then it might be better that they end their Child Benefit claim and you claim it instead.
