So we currently have 2 cars I work nights wife works days she 100% needs a car I kinda do but sometimes she’s not back by the time I leave for work I can get a bus in but getting back would be difficult as it’s early morning finish and no buses run at that time.

So our 2nd car the one she mainly used was the Astra mot runs out in 2 days and we are going to scrap it as the price to put things right well outweighs the value of the car along with a cracked windscreen was the final nail in the coffin.

So how do we go about getting a 2nd car I don’t want to do finance don’t want a loan I’ve said we need to start putting money aside to save can pick up some nice cheap cars for around 3k mark with £20 road tax and good mpg most of them with around 60-70k miles on the clock.

she is pushing for finance or loan which I’m I don’t want to do but I do feel she feels pressure to sort it fast as one of us takes our daughter to netball practice 3 times a week that’s normally when she’s at work with the car and I’d need a car to take her.

she pays £70 a month insurance so said that can go into a saving for a car plus £260 scrap for the car and just keep adding overtime will take time but do feel it’s the sensible way of doing it.
So how far is your trip to & from work?

Not far, & if you have off street parking. Then look at the likes of Leaf or Zoe Quite a few on Autotrader at your price. Will be a lot cheaper to run.
Just looked yeah zoe seem to be ideal and afew about thanks.
i have a car park pass for work so parking isn’t a issue.

how many previous owners should I be wary of on say a 70k miles car 2-3 as seen some like 5-6 so does that raise flags on the car
Two things to be wary of - battery lease and warranty.

Many of the cheaper Zoe's are still on battery lease which costs minimum of £49/month on the 40kWh model. You can buy it out but it's around £2,500.

Second is car warranty. You can extend it for around £400/year but as soon as you miss a year you can no longer buy it. A lot of Zoe's have issues with the motor bearing and it is not a cheap fix...You can extend it for up to 10-years old. Not sure of the mileage restriction. Maybe 100k miles.

Personally I would avoid it. Coming from someone who ran a used Zoe for over 5-years...

Thanks for the info yeah probably not the best option added with the battery lease also.

Don't touch a puretech engine. They are wet belt, and the age you are buying will likely have suffered oil starvation when the belt broke up, even if it has been changed.
(I wouldn't touch an ecoboom Ford either for similar reasons, and you won't believe how much a wet belt replacement costs on an ecoboom ;) )

Seriously consider a Nissan Leaf if you can charge at home, even the early ones will still do at least a couple of days at 20 miles a day.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

If commute is 8-9 miles then you can consider a 2-wheeler moped. If it is 50cc you can drive with your car license. Of course it has caveats like you learning to ride it, bad weather and type of route. You can't take it on motorways.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Would also need a CBT to do this unless his car test was passed before 1/02/2001.

Not a bad idea to be fair and yeah test passed before 2001 so wouldn’t be a problem there work wise that definitely could work would need to sort taking my daughter to netball or maybe she misses afew months while I save up I’m at £800 at the min that would include the 260 get for the Astra for scrap in-laws said they’d help out with £1,000 with no pressure to pay back but will hold off on that as would rather sort myself.

I'd avoid 1.0 Peugeots (just too underpowered) and the "Access" trim level - its really basic. The step up to 1.2 Active shouldn't be too much anyway. Nothing wrong with the VTi/Puretech wet belt engine so long as its been maintained properly, meaning regular oil changes with the right specification oil.

2 people at work have the 1.2 208 and had a few before them said it’s been a reliable car

don’t wanna keep spamming cars on here but any thoughts on the ds4 5 door 1.6 diesel again 35 road tax around same mpg as my 1.7 astra I’ve been over onto a forum a lot seem to mention most seem like pretty strong engines.

Some did seem to mention  stay away from the 1.6 petrol turbo as the turbos are prone to go on them.
again price range 3k could get me 75-80k on the clock on a diesel.
