Hastings Car Insurance Refund

All,

Just recieved an email from Hastings telling me they overcharged me for car insurance and am due a refund. The refund for the difference between what I should have been charged and what I was charged will be processed in ~5 days and will be paid to the account the original payment was made from.

All good so far, only.... I don't have car insurance with Hastings and haven't for some time. Doesn't look like a scam - there is no request for any info from me. I have Hastings home insurance and logging into my account shows nothing pointing to any refund or error on their part.

Anyone else have the same?

I’ve just had the exact same email today!
Haven’t had an updated payment schedule, unable to look on my Hastings app so I believe it’s crashed.
    Will wait and see :)

Same here, no mention of amounts or reasons (tax/miscalculation etc), seems legit but if their system is having a paddy it may have been sent out in error
  • Also got this email! I wouldn't be surprised if this is all a mistake, although I do have active insurance with them. Will wait and see, as I can't get through on the phone

May have been a historical overpayment, assume the email doesnt say it related to THIS year does it? And you did say you havent used them "in some time", so does this mean you once did?
  • Same here too. I do have car insurance with Hastings. Tried to get in touch via app and on-line to confirm, but both not working properly. Made me wonder if they've been hacked, and somebody scamming through them ??

Thanks, glad its not just me.

Did your email contain the opening line of "Since you renewed your car insurance on, , we’ve discovered an error."?... Note the missing date in that line. Could be a mass mail-merge error or signs of dodgyness/hack.

Will wait and see as I have no clue which of tha many bank accounts the refund would be paid into

My email is related to my current active insurance that doesn't expire for a few more months. Not sure about OP, but I've pasted my email below.

    Hello [[My Name]],

Since you renewed your car insurance on, 27 May, we’ve discovered an error. Unfortunately, you were charged a higher price than you should have been. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience and here’s what we’re doing to put things right as quickly as possible.

    Our next steps

We’re now going to make sure you’re refunded everything you’re owed, so you’re paying the amount you should have done originally.

    What this means for you

As you paid a higher price when you renewed your policy, is being refunded to you.

    How you’ll be refunded

    • If you paid for your policy in full, this refund will be sent to the card we have on file within 5 working days.

    • If you pay for your policy monthly the higher price you paid would have also included the wrong amount of Direct Debit interest, which will also be refunded. The total refund will be spread across your remaining Direct Debit instalments. We’ll also send you an updated payment schedule with the details of your new instalment amounts.

Yeah that makes sense and is what I assume (if the refund is legit). Email actually opens with the line "Since you renewed your car insurance on, , we’ve discovered an error" - NOTE the lack of date. I honestly cannot remember having car insurance with hastings but certainly have had other insurance with them.

Will wait and see. Not likely to be a big amount even if legit, but its good that there are others who ahve got the email so we can all compare notes!

Plus one more... I did have a motor policy with HD back in 2022... looks like some resourceful scammer has hacked their address book...
