Sometimes render does come off quite easily. Lime is usually easier than cement. If the joints were raked out for a key that also makes it harder to hack off. Also certain bricks are more prone to damage.

I've seen quite a few cases where the gable wall was done with a lower quality brick (e.g seconds/commons) compared to the front and rear facades and was then rendered/pebbledashed, presumably at the time of construction (though probably not always).

The OP's picture isn't clear enough to be sure, but it doesn't look like there is a significant difference in the bricks here.
