Interesting, I have the same problem and it was almost from new.I've taken the draw out to clean but didn't know anything about syphons.However I've been using it for 7yrs and just clean out, start again. if there's water there I just lob in more softener.It is gloopy though. Must look into that.

The drawer itself is cleaned regularly but after removing it we could see straight away that the tube at the back was gunked up! We gave it a good clean and it has worked, a couple of washes later and all the water is now draining away
