    Interesting, I have the same problem and it was almost from new.
    I've taken the draw out to clean but didn't know anything about syphons.
    However I've been using it for 7yrs and just clean out, start again. if there's water there I just lob in more  softener.
    It is gloopy though. Must look into that.
