Government payment into CTF for one child and not the other

My eldest child with a CTF is now 21 and when she turned 18 she took the money from her CTF. I noticed she’d received two payments from the government for £250. One in August 2011 and the other in October 2012. My youngest is turning 18 in a few months and when I checked her CTF I noticed she hadn’t received these payments. Is there any reason why one child would receive the payment and not the other? Is there anything I can do about it now or has it been too long?

    1. What payments did the government make into Child Trust Funds?

Both children should have got the £250 original payment (how did the second child open a CTF without the £250 voucher? If you did nothing with it then it was opened for them by the government). There was a second voucher for those on low income, your income went up before the second child was due it.

I seem to remember one of mine had an extra payment as we were in receipt of benefits for awhile, but I thought there was a bigger gap in the timings of the payments? Appreciate that might not be all that helpful

When your eldest turned 7 they qualified for a second payment, when your youngest turned 7 they didn't qualify for a second payment as the law had been changed and child trust funds had been abolished.
There is nothing you can do about it.

We have one child with, and one without. As we started paying into regular savers for them at the same time, the young one will benefit from a couple more years of monthly topups which should make up for the difference.

My youngest was born in 2007. She didn’t get any further payments in her CTF after the initial £250 except for interest.

My eldest was born in 2007. In 2010 she got £250 which would be the additional payment for her turning 7. Thank you  kaMelo. She then got an additional £250 in October 2011. Both payments were labelled Government Endowment.

Not entirely sure what the second payment was for and that’s the one I wonder about.

After looking at the document from xylophone (thank you) it may be an additional payment for low-income but it’s more than a year later so I’m not sure.

The most likely answer is that my youngest turned 7 after August 2010 when additional payments were scrapped. It’s just frustrating than one child can end up with so much more and I’m not entirely clear on why.

My eldest was born in 2007.

Your elder child was born in  2003?

The CTF was launched in 2005.

The child of a lower income family qualified for a payment of £500.

Your child received the standard £250.

She was of the cohort eligible for the second payment of £250 (£500 for a child from a lower income family) at age seven

and indeed received this amount in 2010.

You say that she received a payment of £250 in 2011 - is it possible that your family circumstances meant that she would have

qualified for the additional £250 in 2010 and this was a catch up payment?

Your second child was born in 2007 and received the standard payment. The age seven payment had been discontinued for her

cohort therefore she received no additional payments.

Your elder child was  just fortunate by reason of her birth date.
