Insure holiday deposit for 2027 holiday/cruise?

Hi,

We're booking a holiday for August 2027 and have to start paying a deposit schedule over the next few months, starting by the end of this month. As the holiday is over 12 months in the future, I can't find any company that will give us holiday insurance for it. In August 2026 I'll be able to take out travel insurance for it, but until then I don't want to leave our deposit unprotected - e.g. from our circumstances changing due to ill health or something.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how we protect the deposit? By August 2026 we'll have put down around £5,000 and really don't fancy leaving it until we can get full travel insurance.

Thanks.

Are you purchasing insurance for the individual holiday or an annual policy?

You may not need to 'protect' the deposit if you booked with a reputable travel organiser, perhaps with trade affiliations (ABTA/AITO) or if an air inclusive package (ATOL) - or if you paid with a credit card.

£5000 deposit by August seems a hefty amount.  Is it more a case of a holiday payment plan?

what are the terms and conditions regarding cancellation and this payment plan?
I have a cruise booked for 2026 and have paid £250 each deposit - If I cancel up to 150 days before departure I lose the deposit only.
You won't have flights booked at this point
We are saving for the cruise in a high interest account ready to pay balance when due

Try to speak to an insurance broker.  You won't be the only person who has booked a long way in advance and can't find a standard policy to cover you.
  • Similar problem, booked once in a lifetime holiday starting 31 Dec 2025 until 5th Feb 2026, i.e. total of  36 Nights, part of which is a luxury cruise for 18 Nights in South Pacific. As I am travelling on my own I need coverage for cancellation of cruise for £15,000, (pay double if single occupancy) Rest of hol is around the world business class flights with hotel stays, coming to £14,000.
At present I cannot get insurance to cover cancellation of over £10,000. Have already paid deposit of £10,000 for flights and hotels and further £1,250 for the cruise. Different agencies for cruise than for flights and hotels. Fortunately I have an annual bank policy that covers upto £10,000, so using that at present to cover deposit.
I am 71, will be 72 & a half, when going, obviously some pre existing medical conditions but nothing major.
I think the insurance agencies should be taken to court re ageism bias!!
Any ideas anyone, getting quotes of £3,000+ and that does not even cover all of the £30,000 cancellation, maximum I’ve been told that can be covered is £25,000.
I have contacted specialist brokers but when first enquired in December would not cover anything more than 12 months away. Nor were they willing to cover £30,000 cost.

You feel it's obvious that someone of your age will have pre-existing medical conditions but simultaneously consider it to be ageism bias for insurers to price according to risks that are clearly influenced by age?
  • Reply to Eskbanker, you have a point. Not quite what I intended, hence the !!
My main point is, anyone have any ideas of how one obtains cancellation coverage for a luxury cruise that costs more than £10,000 (on my own, so paying double for cabin)
Also cancellation coverage for flights and hotels needing  to be added.
