Just been out for the first proper shop since before Christmas and noticed a few rises, first impression seems it is mainly on bakery items.
Fruit buns in Tesco £1.35 to £1.40
Lidl jam doughnuts 39p to 45p
Lidl french stick 99p to £1.09
Looks we may be in for another inflation rise.
Got some potatoes, carrots & onions in Tesco for 15p though.

Those seem well within the normal week to week fluctuations, at least those that I tend to notice. That being said I think we will see a greater element of food price inflation over the first half of the year than we had in 2024 due to the er's NI rises, the supermarkets will have to pass that on and so they will be aiming to do it over the first half of the year, after the Christmas price war has ended. I would not be surprised to see 5% food price inflation over 2025, mostly loaded into the front half of the year.

Those items have fairly stable pricing, the fruit buns are often reduced to around £1.00 - £1.15 but return to the usual £1.35.  Not increased in Asda yet though + get 5% BLC there.

  • Some significant increases at Sainsburys, called in for only a few things on Friday but a 20% increase in a twin pack of garlic bread from 71p to 85p, a whopping increase of 53p in a 24 pack of their own brand wheat biscuits cereal to £1.90p and ready meals up by nearly 20%.
These are just the ones I noticed in my quick visit, sure there must be many more.

I hadn't looked at the percentage increases but certainly I don't buy ready meals as often as I used to do.  So probably good for my health.

I think the inflation may be temporary and you'll be able to purchase it at its normal price as a Nectar offer before too long.

So much to read, so little time.

Food inflation has remained very high for me.
Its mostly caused by the obsession by supermarkets to bulk sell items, its painful shopping as a singleton.
Its not just bulk sell either, minimum sized sku's are going up,   Everything is aimed at families.
The strategy is usually something like this.
    Old price £1.20 for 100g.
New SKU introduced £1.50 for 200g, - "save money"
    Old SKU taken off shelves.
New SKU is now £2.50 for 200g when you only need 100g.  But fear not there is an offer for £2.75 for 300g showing they can charge a lot less per gram.  This kind of strategy I think fools the inflation numbers as the price per gram isnt massively different, and even goes down on the bigger SKU's.  When the reality is I now pay £2.50 for something that was £1.20.

Not that I want any but someone posted that Maltesers box 310g were now £6.10 in Sainsburys.
They were £5 or £4 with Nectar, so checked the website and they are £6.20. I see Tesco has also put them up to £6.
BM Stores still £3.50 (at the moment anyway).

Tesco - venison - both the grillsteaks & meatballs up from £3 to £3.50, which is16.67%, yet the end of the year they could do them on clubcard for £2.50 so really 40%.  Lots of things seem to have gone up by 25p too.  I must admit that I don't pay as much attention to the prices of the fresh fruit & veg & I very rarely buy bread products.

I'm watching the price of my favoured style of coffee - Own Brand Gold Blend Dupes - out of interest at the way different supermarkets handle things.

End of November everyone had settled at £2.25 per 200g  for a while.

During December Aldi & Lidl moved to £2.35,  Tesco and Sainsburys moved to £2.75

Noticed today when I went in Lidl it's now £2.45 and checking online Aldi have done the same. T and S remain at £2.75.

Will be interested to see if Aldi/Lidl move up in steps to £2.75 over the next couple months or Tesco/Sainsburys price match and present it as a price cut as is usual this time of year.

I thought quite a few of the Tesco Aldi price matches had gone after Xmas but that obviously could just be on the products I tend to look at.
