Looking at purchasing an electric vehicle and wondering if there is a way to add in cheaper overnight charging rate without having to re-contract to a more fixed rate tariff?
Thanks

It's not clear to me what you mean by your question. If you want a cheap off-peak period without a fixed rate tariff, there's Flexible Economy 7, or Agile?N. Hampshire, he/him. Octopus Intelligent Go elec & Tracker gas / Vodafone BB / iD mobile. Ripple Kirk Hill member.

The thing that has to be "intelligent" is your EV and/or your EV charger. No IQ test is required.Reed1

We bought an MG4 for my wife last year, fitted a Zappi charger and moved to Octopus Intelligent Go (IOG). It's brilliant. You get six hours of cheap (7p) per KwH between 23:30 and 05:30. You tell Octopus when you need the car charged by and how much charge to give it. They work out the rest which is good. Now to what I think is the brilliant bit.
Plug the car in during the day and, regardless of time, Octopus will work out a charging shedule. OK, sometimes it will say the schedule is overnight but quite often it starts charging almost before I've got back in the house. The plus here is that any power you use while the car is charging is also at the cheap rate. This has a health warning in that Octopus can "revise" the schedule at any time (Turn it off without warning) but you will still get your car charged by when yo say you need it - so long as that includes the overnight bit.
We've now gone a stage further. We added a Tesla Powerwall (Because it was cheaper then the competition - and IMHO, better) and some more solar panels. The battery ties in to the cheap overnight timings and I've added an automation which stops the Powerwall discharging into the car and charges whilst the car is charging.
Then there's Octopus free power up sessions. I charge the car (If it's home) and the Powerwall using a different automation. Plus I run whatever else I need to.
IOG doesn't tie you in for a fixed period either.

Thanks for all your comments. I realise not it was a bit of an open ended question, so I've created a new one with more specific comments/questions
