Travel Insurance-Don’t Want Pre Existing Conditions Cover.

Hi All, First time on here and posting after pretty fruitless search for an answer.
My question is can anyone recommend an insurer where you are not required to have cover for any pre existing conditions?

We have a Nationwide Flex Plus account which includes travel insurance and this issue came up some years ago when dealing with their insures, UK Insurance. I was advised that if I did not wish to have cover for a pre existing condition I could simply decline it.
However, trying to get quotes online the issues is that you need to declare the conditions but can’t then decline cover.
This would be the best option as the whole reason for having the Flex Plus in the first place was to get the travel insurance.

Another option is using a broker as one condition my wife has does not fit with any of the online health questions that I have looked at, so any suggestions in that regard would be useful.

I intend to contact Aviva direct to raise the questions but as one NY resolution is to not put things off thought a post here might help!
Thanks.

You may have to phone round, starting with Nationwide. They will want to know about pre-existing conditions even if they are not covered, because they will also exclude anything even vaguely linked if you do need to make a claim.
This will also give you the chance to discuss your wife’s condition if it doesn’t fit into any of the boxes. When I had a similar issue, I had to contact the GP because they wanted to know exactly what terminology the medical records used.
You used to be able to exclude conditions with staysure, but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Unfortunate I think this means using on line systems is not going to work well, so you’ll have to phone round if you insist on DIY, but why not use a broker to do the leg work for you.

Do you want any pre-existing conditions covered or are you happy to have them all excluded?

Certainly I've only experienced the choice as to paying the AP or not when doing the medical screening on the phone rather than online however in most cases its been packaged travel insurance with bank accounts where the option was available but its been years since trying to buy stand alone travel insurance so haven't had the conversation with the big players on the matter.

There are one or two companies that simply exclude all pre-existing conditions, those you can do online because it's a blanket exclusion they dont even collect what the conditions may be. Inevitably it's going to add delay to claims you'd imagine.
  • With Nationwide and have their Flexi account worldwide cover, my question is we opened our bank account in 2008 and had no pre existing conditions, in 2010 I had knee replacement and subsequently 15 months ago a revision, as all this started prior to to 2010 should these be classed as pre existing conditions or should Nationwide still allow me full cover without declaring.

They'll be pre-existing for any trips you booked after you first had symptoms

Hi All, Thanks for the replies.
Following this post I spent a lot of time both with online and phone enquiries. It was clear from a Which? article that most insurers use one of two medical assessment software packages and their questions are very similar.

The problem for us is that it is impossible to answer the questions re my wife’s condition so moved on to the broker/direct contact.
Only one, insurewith, came back and said that my wife’s condition was unheard of and offered cover based on their medical experts opinion.

We mentioned this to my wife’s oncology consultant who said that the likely issue, as it was becoming clear, was that my wife’s condition  was unique, he only knew of one other person that had her issue.

He is still of the opinion that travel is not an issue but we have now decided that until her treatment is completed travel abroad will have to wait.
