in Energy
Hi getting an EV suitable for octopus tariffs . I am with them currently on fixed from July 24. We generally use most energy during the day, not sure whether to use this tariff or just standard we would only charge car maybe 2 a week at the most.. Don't want to be paying more in the long run. Any comments .
Thank you

Basic arithmetic.
Work out the cost per month on both tariffs and then choose accordingly.
Bear in mind that you get electricity for the whole house at the cheap rate on IOG, not just the car charging.1 -

More often than not you can charge car during the daytime periods which means whole house is at off peak rate of 7p.
Best to get one of the 3 Octopus approved wall boxes, as linking to car can be hit of miss due to changes in car API on their apps.
This is how I run the tariff. Every time I know we are going to be using a lot of daytime electric, car gets plugged in, I get a schedule of the charging periods & work household usage round that. Stopping car charge once house use is back to normal usage.
As per below.

It's been really dull here for more than a week, living in a cloud basically!
I could do with some charge in my home batteries outside the normal 23.50 to 05.50.
I haven't quite run out any day yet but it's getting close.
So, I just plug the car in and it creates a schedule between 23.50 and 05.30.
Do I tell it I need the car sooner?
What if the car is fully charged.
What if the car finishes charging before the end of the allocated slots, does it revert to standard rate then?
Isn't this bump charging?
They say you can only bump charge three times a month without losing the benefits, whatever that means?
A lot of questions but I am sure you know the answers.
If you have time to answer, it would help a lot!

I just plugged my wife's car in and told the app that I want the car by 04.00, the earliest I could set.
It now has a charging schedule set between 20.30 and 04.00 in one continuous block.
I will just amend my home battery charging schedule to start at 20.30 instead of 23.30.
Seems to good to be true!
I know you told me this before but I forgot about it, a bit foolish of me!

Depends on wall box.
My car is not linked to Ohme app. So I can just tell it that I want x % by whatever time I set.
Mine is a Ohme Home Pro & I use the Ohme app. I take it that other ones also have a app.
So I tell app that I need say 30% charge by 17:00. Pick your own time. As you will guess around 12:00 & 16:00 are where you are most likely to not get a charge. Peak use.
That then gives me the schedule of when it will be charging car.
So as you can see from above pic, it stopped @ 15:00 & started again @17:00 so in your case you would need to make sure that batteries were not charging in that period, or it's full price.
Not had any issues & have done this 5 times this month, with car getting between 10 to 20% But times are usually under 2 hours.
If car is charged well you can't do it. Lucky we have 2, so can put daughters on if required. Or just take hit on full price or move house use to another day.
But mine gets a 100% once a month & the rest of the month usually has enough to add a % that will do for house use.

We have two electric cars also, I have a Tesla which I charge at work foc.
With that, I can limit the charge from the car and its app.
So I could charge that at home if i really want to.
Does the cheap rate finish when the car has received its full charge or does it continue to the end of the periods allocated by Octopus?
In my case today, the car wont be fully charged in three hours so starting at 20.30 it will be into the 23.30 to 05.30 period anyway before it is finished.
I wonder what would happen if it was finished by say 22.30, would it still be the cheap rate for the house from 22.30 to 23.30?0 -

Thanks for your help, the most useful post for me that I have ever read on here!0 -
Who would have thought.
Smart meter, tou tariff, two evs, heat pump, solar panels and battery storage.
I buy all my electricity for 7p per kWh, sell all my excess generation for 15p per kWh, pay 1.4p per kWh for my heating and DHW, pay about 2p per mile for motoring and never have to go to a petrol station ever again. No gas and nothing burnt at our house.
And it's all supposed to be a con????/!!!!!!!0 -
I don't understand a thing you are all talking about. All I need to know is, is it worth getting EV tariff or stick with my fixed plan as we will only charge once a week maybe twice.
