Taking sons friend on holiday question.

Hi,
have decided to take my sons 11yr old friend on holiday with us to Spain. Can anyone tell me if I will need a letter of consent or anything else off his mum (other than his own passport of course) to allow me to take him out of the country.
thanks in advance
Jules :)

His own E111 form as he wont be covered by yours.Travel insurance. We didn't need any written concent for my daughters 13 yr old friend although possibly need my head examined for taking on the extra hassle :-)

Can I just butt in here to ask..when you take away kids friends, do you cover ALL costs/SOME costs/ALL except spending money etc?

Thanks Budgetflyer. I'm a single parent and my son gets fed up of trying to find friends to play with when we go away, so I hope it'll be a benefit and not a real pain! lol
aliasojo, the cost for 1 week at an all inc resort is approx £230 each, I couldn't afford to pay all that for the friend, so told them that we were thinking of going away for a week and if he wanted to come with us then the cost would be around £150, so I am paying some myself and also will be paying the full amount myself for the taxi when we get there of approx 100 euros return.
I'm sure others will have different views, and if it was just a camping holiday or something, then I would probably have just told him to bring his spending money.
    thanks

when i took my son to USA i was told i should take evidence we were part of the same family as we all have different names.. i just took his birth certificate and my divorce papers

whilst we were not asked for them last thing i wanted was to get there and they did ask

basically what i am saying (in amongst the waffle lol) is best to check and be prepared and not use then to be asked and not have

I would suggest his mum just drawing up a letter giving you parental responsibility whilst he is in your care. Just incase he needs some treatment (not necessarily major, but say if he cuts himself and needs a couple of stitches), then you can give permission for the treatment to be carried out. Also stops any over zealous person muttering child abduction.
No Matter what you do there will be critics.

I suggest you get some advice about a letter of consent from the lad's mum/dad and what form it should take. I am sure that I have seen somewhere that unless you are the child's legal guardian and can prove that to immigration officers then you may have problems. This was introduced to try and allevaite the problems of parents and others absconding abroad with children who they either had no custody over or before custody could be decided.

Better to be safe than sorry. I am sure Citizens advice would be able to advise you.

Oh No! This is starting to look like the start of a lot of hassle. Although I can understand the reasoning behind it, I was just hoping to get away with a signed letter of consent from his mum(see example below). Do you think it will have to be notarised too? Anyone here from CAB who can give me an answer it'd be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
