    That would e my bet as well, either looking for nuts they think they buried, or putting more in

    Oh yes most likely squirrels.  Since there's been a recent decline in local foxes the squirrels seem to be in mass abundance.  I'm sure the balance will be restored at some point.  Meanwhile I've got some sturdy mesh that I'll put over the low plants and on the pots that have tulip bulbs.
