Hi, my son has a 6 month warranty on a 2nd hand car he brought from a garage. Unfortunately as I write this the car has apparently ( according to the RAC man who I spoke to on the phone) had a major engine/ belt failure . Pistons and valves all knacked , no compression etc. He has only had the car 4 months so still under warranty. It’s just cost him £407 to have car transported from Bristol to Cornwall as he only had road side assistance. Should I have any problems regarding repair, refund from the garage? I guess the cost of getting the car transported is down to my boy. Thankyou.

  • Have a careful read of the terms of the warranty. I bought a car from a local garage years ago with a warranty but when the clutch failed it transpired that it only covered actual breakdowns on a journey.  But it sounds as though this might a breakdown situation if the RAC attended?
  • I’m just hoping the garage excepts the car in now knacked and are helpful in offering   a repair or refund under the warranty.

It'll depend on what the warranty terms and conditions are, who the warranty was with, and whether the terms and conditions laid out have been adhered to. You'll need to dig out the paperwork/email that contains the details, and then see what it says.
  • Thanks, so when my lad brought the car a new cambelt kit was fitted. The RAC report says “ engine failure, cambelt slipped/ broken with damage”. As I say he got a 6 month warranty and had the car less than 5 months. Thoughts on this please.

How did he pay for the car?

I would expect to be covered.
his responsibility that he didn’t take recovery.

    Who fitted cambelt kit?
Has car been serviced in line with manufacture spec since?

Use car warranties are mostly there to distract you from your legal rights.  They avoid paying out if they can find any excuse.
If the car breaks down within 6 months of purchase, then it is assumed to have been faulty when sold, unless the dealer can show otherwise.  The dealer is responsible for fixing it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Thanks for reply’s . OMG, what a day. Boys car arrived from Bristol down to the garage in Cornwall where he brought if from this afternoon……..Had a call from the garage about an hour after it arrived to say , nothing wrong with the cam belt. We looked over the car and test drove for 10 miles… So how could RAC man tell me pistons and valves were knacked due to cam belt……. So there is a fault other wise the car would not of broke down with an awful noise when my boy tried to turn it over…..RAC also found a fault and could not get it started because of cam belt?????? The garage have been very good, this morning after telling them it was the cam belt they said it would be fixed, don’t worry etc. Even given my lad a car indefinitely…. However there is something wrong with the car and I’m not happy to take it unless the problem is found and resolved.
