Does ESA stop and one has to claim UC if you go over the 28 day travel abroad limit?

What would happen to my ESA if I was abroad longer then 28 days due to no fault of my own and this dastardly fog that is plaguing the UK. Would I have to inform the DWP that I was away longer then 28 days and what would happen to my benefits?

Yes you would need to inform them

Income Related ESA stops after 28 days. The day you go and come home are not counted. When you do return you would need to claim Universal Credit. How soon is it before you go?

Working in the travel sector, I get to see all kinds of issues.  Weather being one of them, but a number of things can go wrong which delays your return.

My main advice is don't plan long holidays (26+ days) because any issue would have the potential to push you over the 28 day limit.

Just remember an outbound flight becomes an inbound flight, eg MSE 1 Heathrow to Cape Town, becomes MSE 2 Cape Town to Heathrow.  If MSE 1 is cancelled then it cant be MSE 2.  If your constantly running the risk of going over the 28 days then odds are you’ll. get caught out one day.
