Glad to hear that you have at least another 6 months on contract, @PipneyJane, shame that it's been a challenge for you though. I'm a bit underemployed at the moment and trying to find more hours but not sure which direction to go in....
The shawl looks lovely and delicate.
It's almost Winter Solstice here down under and I'm hosting a get together at my place to celebrate the longest night and the return of the sun. I spent a couple of years in the US (Wisconsin) and a year in the UK, I found that the winter season for Christmas made a lot more sense. My hubby is English (Bristol) and finds the summer Christmas here a bit weird

Happy Winter Solstice, @kiwisavings
I can understand why your husband finds Christmas in summer a bit strange. Growing up in Oz, it always felt a bit schizophrenic: hot Christmas Eve, but every child in the country goes to bed hoping (somehow) to wake up to a snowy winter’s day. Meanwhile, their mums are cooking the traditional hot Christmas roast dinner, complete with Christmas Pudding, in a kitchen which is hotter than the Sahara.

Well, I don't know why you Antipodeans are commenting about the strangeness of having Xmas in summertime- surely the strangest thing is that you all walk around on your hands all the time, upside-down, away down on the other side of the world...(I was very little when I honestly thought that, in my defence!)I must update my signature- wild spending spree in advance of camping holiday on the Dorset coast, forthcoming next month- I bought a pair of hiking sandals online but they're not really robust enough, although possibly worth keeping as day-to-day sandals. So I went into town and bought a proper pair, which will cope with scrambling over rocks and splashing in and out of the sea and so on. We won't be doing twelve-mile route-marches but probably a few miles most days, and lots of scrambling and swimming, definitely! I have a new pair of lace-up plimsoles for swimming in, too.I have also found a retired engineer who delights in cleaning and servicing vintage sewing machines so my 1902 Singer is now having major spa-holiday treatment! I hope to be sewing much more happily after next week2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Ooohhhh.... Excellent news about your sewing machine @Laura_Elsewhere.
Also, when will you be in Dorset? I hope you have lovely weather. My choir are singing at Wimborne Minster on Saturday 5th July. (It's a busy weekend for me: I'll be at the Oval the night before, for the England Ladies T20, then driving down on the Saturday and driving back on the Sunday.)

Hello! I've been MIA for a while, but it's lovely to pop in and catch up with everyone!
I have purchases to declare, a pack of four vests and some trainers.
I make that 5 coupons for the trainers and I'm not sure for the vests. If cami-knickers are 4, would a vest/camisole be 2????A small, orange, enamel teapot sort of person apparently...

I think many of us are going to have to pull our socks up - and darn them. Nearly at the end of the above cutting is something new: 'Second-hand articles are only exempt if sold below certain prices'.
But how much? And what does that translate into nowadays?I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

Hi @Cherryfudge,
there was some VERY complicated information around second hand clothes on July 1st (the same day that the revised list came out);
If £1 in 1941 equals approx £43.75 today, and with 240 pennies and 20 shillings to the pound, this works out to be about:
1s = £2.19 today
1d = £0.18 today
Just to be super complicated, this amount then needs to be multiplied by the number of coupons needed per article
So, the 26 coupon suit mentioned would be 26x 2s. = 52s. = £113.88 today's money
Women's shoes at 5 coupons x 1s. 6d. = £16.35 today's money
Women's jumpers at 8 coupons x 2s. = £35
Women's non woollen shirts or trousers at 5 coupons x 2s. = £21.90
Women's socks at 2 coupons x 1s. = £4.38
So, I'm guessing that most second hand items bought today would be fine, unless you are buying some seriously fancy things....
