Shetland's Organisation for Knitters (S.O.K.) have written this blisteringly powerful piece on why it is not simply a "sense of humour failure" but actually really does matter.

I bought a book! Instead of flowers for our 46th wedding anniversary.
Second hand of course. I was waiting for a copy at a reasonable price.
Lunch at the local college, cooked and served by the catering students, on Thursday.
Amateur theatre on Friday.
I wonder if the author might be able to answer your Utility Mark fabric question, @alicef ?

Ooohhh.... @Nelligrace I will be waiting with baited breath for your book review and summary!

thriftmonster said:Those poor dogs. Again should have used a mannequin

Absolutely @thritmonster. I’ve just watched this week’s episode and the only thing going for those dogs is that they’re Italian Greyhounds so probably used to wearing coats in cold weather. (Looked like whippets to me. Small, skinny things. Their eyes told me that, generally, they weren’t enjoying being models.)
Also, I’d have probably knitted a ribbed neckline and crocheted the rest of the dog coat. Much faster. Someone - I don’t remember who - did just that.
Seriously, though, how did the production crew choose the participants? Their skill levels are so varied, it’s unfair to put a bespoke tailor (Hoelgar) against an A-level student! I twice watched the section where they commented on ?Melody’s twisted knit stitches - she’s just a beginner, poor kid. I think the voice over was much crueller than the judges. No, they aren’t necessarily a mistake.
The one positive thing is that I think the knitters made a better choice of fibre this week. To my eyes, most items were knitted in worsted/Aran weight.
I’m really not sure whether I’ll watch another episode.

I don't think I know anyone planning to watch a third episode- I just avoided it anyway (I can't stand Sewing Bee, so knew I wouldn't like this) but a lot of friends watched it and then gave it a second chance, but it's shedding viewers- so far as I can tell- like nothing on earth...
It's now too chilly for my cotton needlecord pinafore-dress so I waded into my stocks and have six yards of mid blue-grey cotton sateen, very heavy smooth stuff, which I plan to turn into another pinafore dress asap, because I really don't want to be pushed back into skirts with tight waistbands while I am still this big; just being able to pull a dress on iver my head has been wonderful, from the summer in sundresses, to my autumn needlecord pinafore, and now I need a midwinter one!
so I shall have to get sewing...

That sounds lovely material for a pinafore dress, Laura
I recently got a 1930s Jones CS hand wheel turned sewing machine so this weekend will be practising with that. It was in the charity shop complete with wooden case“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I've been away on special ops!
Thank you very, very much @Nelliegrace for the author details. The gentleman is a historian and researcher on the 40s, so if anyone would know! I'll try to track down some details of his publisher. The book looks very interesting as well. Unfortunately our county libraries do not have a copy so I've set up a search to see if I can get an inexpensive 2nd hand volume. I also thought that I could send a question in to the Imperial War Museum re cloth spec 9.
