Restriction on savings if claiming benefits

See last sentence on the link below.
I have over £16K in savings and also claim Disability Living Allowance. and have done for many years.
Does DLA count as a benefit and does this rule apply to me.
Thanks

"If you have any savings over £16,000, you won't be eligible for benefits" is to what you refer and this is not true. It effectively only applies to means tested benefits and DLA (and its successor PIP) is not such a benefit. You can claim DLA benefit with any level of savings and indeed a former Prime Minister used to get it for his son.

Sadly like a lot of tabloid type articles on benefits they evoke sensationalism and lose accuracy - this is a good example judging by the headline and final line. It ends up causing unnecessary concern for people like you.

Do you claim any other benefits?
(Savings of over £16k would normally preclude payments of Universal Credit and other means tested benefits)

  • Thanks Muttleythefrog I really am  most grateful and it's put my mind at rest.
As you rightly say it was a 'sensational' article increasing common on yahoo news
