Compensation for two canceled Northern trains and a more expensive TFW service.

Options
OK I'm rather angry at the moment so excuse me if this comes off as ranty.

Yesterday I bought a ticket to get me from Chester to Manchester Picadilly this morning, the ticket was £6.50.

Northern canceled the train at short notice (notified via email at 1:47AM).

The staff at the station checked for me and confirmed my ticket was not transferrable to the TFW service to Manchester, annoying but fair enough.

The next available Northern service, an hour later, was also canceled and I had little faith the 11AM (ish) service would run.

That left me little to no option but to get a ticket on a more expensive TfW service, £14.50 (which would have been cheaper if I'd bought the day before).

I've now been offered a 'full refund' of my £6.50 which still leaves me £8 out of pocket because of the more expensive ticket I had to buy to get me to work an hour late.

Is it feasible to reclaim that extra £8 as well from Northern (not least for the sheer bloody inconvenience they inflicted)?

If so how do I go about that, letter writing?
