Overpaying tax

I started new job in Sept 2024. I gave my tax code which is showing on my wage slip. But Im paying tax when my expected income is far less than my tax code.
It says on HMRC that if my tax code is right, my employer should refund the tax in next wage slip, but this has not happened.
How do I sort this as could really do with that money as over £100

On your last payslip what is your taxable pay to date and how much tax was paid. What does is the payslip? And what is the tax code?
  • Your expected income isn't important, it's your actual income your employer is paying you that the tax is based on.

Can you post some details from your payslip?
  • Taxable gross pay is £3796, tax paid £50.20, Ni £7.36. Tax code 1130N
  • Taxable gross pay is £3796, tax paid £50.20, Ni £7.36. Tax code 1130N
Well for one month £3,796is way above your tax code allowance.

But if that is your total income to 5 January (month 9 of the tax year) then you are well under your tax code allowances.

Did you have any other earnings (or taxable benefits from DWP) before this job?

Could the tax code be being operated on a non cumulative basis?  This is sometimes shown as an x after the tax code or is referred to as week1/month1 basis.
  • Its year to date. No income before this job. Does say week1/month 1 on wage slip but tax code is showing as 1130N.

So can I do anything or do I have to wait til end of tax year??

With a W1/M1 tax code every month is taken in isolation so any overpaid tax will not be refunded until HMRC reconcile the year, tax is deducted on anything over £942.43 per month.  You need to speak to HMRC to get that code changed to cumulative.  What taxable income / benefit were you receiving for the first part of the year ?
  • Have you updated your estimated taxable income for the year in your personal tax account?
    Fashion on the Ration
    2024 - 43/66 coupons used, carry forward 23
    2025 - 60.5/89
  • Looking at HMRC my tax code is 1130NX. How do I change this as cant see a way on HMRC ?

Updating your estimated income at this job might work but the guaranteed way is to call them (might be quiet tomorrow?) and ask for a cumulative tax code to be issued.

Your employer will then automatically make any refund due (likely the full £50.20) when they pay you in the month to 5 February.
  • ok will do thanks
