Didn't know about 3.5 drives needing 13amp power. Cheers. Thought because it said USB 2.0 meant it was powered through this... this info will make me re think what drive i'll buy.

This is a 3.5" disk drive not a 2.5" unit it needs mains power! The others on this thread are based on 2.5" disk drives that draw their power from the USB port are small enough to fit into a shirt pocket.
Seth - do you know if Iomega is any good???
The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

Nice article with a good picture of lots of 2.5" drives on a 3.5" unit. These bare drives are put in plastic or metal cases and sold as external drives. BOTH connect to your PC / MAC with a USB cable but the 3.5" need a power connection as well.

Page 2 is excellent, it talks about using these drives in computers but you can see how different the drives are!

Oh if you did not like my mix of approx dimensions,,,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk#Form_factors
    • "3½ inch" drive: (4 in x 1 in x 5.75 in = 101.6 mm x 25.4 mm x 146 mm)
This smaller form factor, first used in an HDD by Rodime in 1984, was the same size as the "half height" 3½ FDD, 1.e., 1.63 inches high. Today has been largely superseded by 1-inch high “slimline” or “low-profile” versions of this form factor which is used by most desktop HDDs.
    • "2½ inch" drive: ((2.75 in x 0.374 in x 3.945 in = 69.85 mm x 9.5 mm x 100 mm)
This smaller form factor was introduced by PrairieTek in 1988; there is no corresponding FDD. It is widely used today for hard-disk drives in mobile devices (laptops, music players, etc.). Today, the dominant height of this form factor is 9.5 mm, but there were also 19 mm, 17 mm, and 12.5 mm high variants in use.

I posted the 250GB passport for £72 (post #5). BTW I see the seller is Pixmania which will add another £4 for P&P, still a good deal & reputable seller too.

beware pixmania if anything goes wrong... part of DSG group based in France (where you have to return) and customer service non-existent. I fought for over a year to get the money I was owed back and even then I took a hit...
