Passport end date

Options
Sorry if this has been a question that many folk have asked before but I just wanted this clarified. My husband's passport was issued on 2nd September 2015 and expires on 20th June 2026. However, we know that the ten year rule means we cannot travel past 2nd September 2025. We have a holiday booked in early May and late June next year. We also have a couple of EU trips in early 2025. With this in mind, when we renewed my passport to a blue one, we went to Peterborough which is not too far away and got my passport the next day. Whilst we appreciate it is more expensive than sending it off, it does mean that if my husband and I wish to travel last minute, we can. I know he has to have at least 3 months left on his passport when traveling to EU. Are these three months after 2nd September or before (meaning last day of travel return would be 2nd June?)
With that in mind, our travel dates being second week of May and last week of June, when would be the ideal time to go to Peterborough Passport office? We do not have any other holidays booked after June? Thank you

The three month period is the final months prior to actual expiry, so 20 March 2026 would be the last date on which to leave from the EU, in that it's unrelated to the separate entry check for ten years from issue.

Just check Entry requirements - Spain travel advice - GOV.UK eg for Spain, and just amend the URL to replace Spain with whatever country you're going to.

You may need an ETIAS next year in the unlikely event they've got their act together and launched it (it was supposed to have been launched years ago, but it is the EU....)
