Don't worry TIW, it was done by a quality stonemason. ( would have been better if I'd done it)
I just thought of this photo as it emphasised what you said about darker joints. The lower slabs have larger, more irregular joints, and the joints colour helps disguise this, whereas the steps and above have accurate cuts and the joints can stand out. 1 -
