Boiler Frost protection

Hi,

We have the Worcester boiler CDi 29 Classic, located in the loft. As we have now started going away during the winter months I have some concerns regarding frost damage.

The boiler has two frost protection features: ‘Frost Protection’ (For the boiler) and ‘Holiday Setting’ which will turn off the heating system and provides frost protection for the boiler. The heating of domestic hot water will stay active. Neither of these protect any remote pipework.

I contacted technical support at Worcester Bosch and the reply was: ‘All our boilers have built in frost protection. At 8˚ the circulation pump will run to keep the water circulating around the system, if the temperature drops to 5˚ it will actually fire the boiler up at a low output to also warm the water circulating around the system. This feature is built in and is not able to be turned off.’

According to the above, this seems to me to be a feature that is in addition to the two function buttons already on the boiler. I would appreciate a clarification of this from anyone who knows these boilers.

I've read too that a ‘frost stat’ should be fitted in the case of a garage or loft installation, but this doesn't seem to have been done The manual that came with it states that one should be fitted. Anyway, this I will need to get done after the holidays as we are away soon. How much would be a reasonable price be to have one fitted?

Thanks

Surely you need frost protection for the whole house, so your water pipes in house do not freeze & burst.

    Drain the heating system down?
But not sure I would want to leave house unheated over winter.

  • Thanks for your reply. If the boiler does automatically come on in the manner that the manufacturer says it does a drain down would not be necessary. What I want to establish is, is what they tell me in addition to the already existing boiler frost protection which does not protect remote pipework.
