It’s going to become a big problem very fast if they don’t do something to control it.

I already did.  The forum needs to be auto checking for AI content so it doesn’t appear in the first place.

    Already gone.

If it was clearly advertising, reporting it as spam is not a problem.
What seems to be the problem is posters using AI generated responses - and how MSE mods deal with these reports.

I agree in a perfect world that should be done but I don't know how it can be managed without also deleting some regular content as well.  Many of us will quote a bit of something - basically showing our research.  And the idea that most AI is from the US and a bit folksy in it's writing style might be an issue for people writing here that are not British.

It wasn’t even really advertising.  It was some AI generated text about how to create a business plan using AI.  There were no mentions or links to any specific software or businesses.  Just a collection of not very useful words.

Whenever I quote anything, I also add the link to the origin of the quote.

I've just been browsing the forum rules.
It will be interesting to see what MSE say about this thread.

    Don't rely – verify!

Our Forum offers a wealth of MoneySaving wisdom, tips, hints and information both new and historical. However, some of the information changes quickly, is opinion or may be incorrect. We don't verify or take responsibility for what is posted by the community. No two people have the same circumstances or experience and it is up to you to investigate, check and check again before you make any decisions or take any action based on information you glean from our community. Remember, don't rely on what you are reading. Verify it and protect yourself. You are responsible for any action you consequently make.

'Fake news' has a significant impact in society, and it is wise to verify something before blindly stating it as true, or sharing it on a public Forum. Be wise. If we feel something does cross the line and/or is harmful or detrimental to our users, we reserve the right to remove it.

This includes posts we believe have been generated by AI. Artificial intelligence can be a useful tool – MSE has its own AI chatbot – but the Forum is a place for real people to share their experiences and insights.

Even auto binning posts that have a very high (say 90% or more) probability of AI content would be a start.

To be honest it’s probably a losing battle anyway.  As the AI software improves, it will become harder to identify.  Plenty of people are already responding to the FlaatusGoat posts without realising they’re AI generated.

I just don't know what the motivation is, the user mentioned above (FlaatusGoat) seems to be the first to reply to a lot of newly created threads. Presumably they are pasting opening posts into an AI engine and relaying the generated text back in.

Why do this? It completely removes the human element. Is it for post building? is it for some strange kick? a misplaced desire to help?

Why would we need humans doing this? If it was a desirable feature (it really isn't!) the MSE devs could implement automatic AI responses to all new posts - a hideous thought indeed. I think something should be done to automatically detect and limit AI generated responses.
If FlaatusGoat does have a misplaced desire to help, then they've misunderstood what these AI tools do - they don't provide authoritative answers, but synthesise available sources into vaguely plausible-sounding text. The Forum mods really do need to get a grip on it before we are drowning in this bilge.

Fortunately it's text that very few humans would actually write - one post last night began every other paragraph with something like 'So, like, you want to save money? That's just amazing!'

My suspicion is that some of these users are building up their post count before starting to spam.

It is concerning there is no apparent plan in place to deal with all this AI nonsense being posted.
