Can you sort your Facebook settings to stop friends seeing posts on groups?

Apart from the obvious - get rid of <friend> or remove Facebook etc.

So I get that private groups your friends list wont see your comments within said group.

I'm talking more about public groups, when you post responses to an ongoing discussion or create a discussion yourself.

How do you prevent this from coming up in friends news feed?

Fair enough if they're also a member of said group but I don't need Jane contacting me because I posted in coffee lovers anonymous & wanting to start up a conversation about my love of coffee.

or whatever.

I just don't need people getting this stuff shoved in their faces, so how do you stop it?

You don't. You can't control what appears in somebody else's feed, and if you post in a public group Facebook may decide your friend who's feed it is on may also be interested in that gruop.

Simple solution is if you don't want people  to see what groups you are posting in, then either don't post in those groups or don't use Facebook at all.  The more modern equivalent of those things is probably a Discord server.

If you go to the hamburger menu, then Settings and Privacy, then Privacy Centre then tap Audience. 

You can choose who can (or cannot if you prefer) see various types of posts. 

You can also Limit who can see posts you've previously made which were public.
