Bring my car home

Options
There seems to be a bit of a gap in possible insurance cover:

I am about to take along drive across the country with my family. If my car breaks down, it has break down cover. If anyone gets sick, I am sure we can find a doctor.

But I am the only driver. What if I am no longer able to drive? (Let's say I break my foot, for argument's sake.)

Who will bring my car and my family home?

Apparently, this is possile abroad with European breakdown cover, but not in the UK. I have made several enquiries but have drawn a blank so far.

Any ideas?

A decent travel insurance policy might cover the cost of getting you all home again after a serious injury that prevented you from driving, although getting the car back would probably be a different story....

Check RAC cover, I think their onward travel cover is what you're looking for. Suspect if that's right then other breakdown cover will include it as an add on too.

Thats why you skip the cheaper options and get the decent breakdown packages.  They will recover the car either supplying
a driver or using a recovery truck and take the driver to the same location or a different location.

I don't think the OP is asking about cover if their car breaks down.

They are asking about cover if the car is fine, but the driver becomes sick or injured and is unable to drive.

So as @eskbanker says, that's more related to Travel Insurance than Breakdown Cover.

(So maybe the Motoring board isn't the best place for this question.)

From the RAC page regarding Onward Travel:
"If the policy holder is too ill to drive, we can provide alternative transport to get you to your destination. We can also cover the costs of public transport or hotel accommodation up to the value of £150 per person or £500 in total."

  • If you check the above, it doesn’t mention returning the vehicle, only taking care of the passengers.

Putting my cynical hat on, vehicle breakdown cover is for vehicles and travel insurance is for people. What the OP is asking about falls between the two.

But that does not get Op car  home, as per thread title. 🤷‍♀️

TBH, £150 per person is not going to get you far with a overnight stop or train travel.

You don't need the car to breakdown to be covered for the get you home section of the cover.  My sister had to use it once and they
loaded the car onto a recovery truck and brought them home. RAC top package at the time back then.  She came down with a migraine
in the middle of nowhere with 4 kids in the car and late at night. Brought them all back and the car approx 90 miles.

So 100% yes breakdown cover will do what they want, just not the cheap packages.  There was an option of sending a driver
but with only 5 seats all occupied that was not really an option.

Search on the internet and there are loads of people who will return your car home. Show some interest and you'll get flooded with emails offering their services. The family will have to fend for themselves if your breakdown cover doesn't cover that.

I can’t see travel insurance covering you though to get you home again if you’re visiting and staying with family in the UK, does it?
